Every dog we breed carries the affix St Legacy on their registration papers. It isn't a brand name we picked out of a hat.
The "S" and the "T" are for Sykes and Tommy, who we lost far too young.
And then there was Bentley, who spent nine months with us and who we lost in a way we still find hard to talk about.
So when it came time to register our affix with KUSA and SACBR, there was really only one name. Everything we do with our dogs, and every puppy that leaves our home, is a small way of keeping those three with us.

We put the papers up because anyone can check them, and because you should. There are a lot of people in South Africa selling Frenchies that don't exist. A breeder who won't show you papers, or won't let you meet the parents, is telling you something.
We adore this breed, and we want you to go in knowing what you're getting. Frenchies are a little different from other dogs in a few ways, and none of it is hard once you know. Here's what we'd tell a friend over coffee.
That lovely flat face comes with a shorter airway, so they're noisy sleepers and not the most enthusiastic about exercise. A short walk and a long nap is their idea of a good day.
Panting doesn't cool them the way it does other dogs, so summer is early-morning and evening walks, and shade and water in the garden. It becomes routine quickly, and a Frenchie on a cool tiled floor in January is a very happy dog.
Big head, short legs, heavy chest. If you have a pool, a fence, cover or a well-fitted life jacket is part of the deal. Ours are strictly poolside supervisors.
The cute screw tail comes with a spine that likes to be treated gently. A ramp or steps to the bed, no big jumps, a harness rather than a collar, and keeping them lean. Weight is the single biggest thing you control, and it's the kindest.
The face folds get a wipe and the ears get a clean, once a week. Some of them need a hand at the other end too, which nobody mentions until you own one. Ten minutes. We'll show you how before your puppy goes home.

Once the vet has confirmed a pregnancy, we let the waiting list know. From there you can do one of two things: put down a deposit to book a particular puppy, or wait and meet the puppies that are still available at eight weeks. Nobody is penalised for not paying a deposit, but those who have will get first choice. Either way, you get the full sale agreement before you pay a cent.
The puppies are raised in the house, underfoot. You get weekly pictures, videos and weights so you can watch your puppy grow, and bond a little before you meet. First vaccination, deworming, microchip and a vet check happen before anyone goes home.
At around eight weeks you visit and meet the puppy you've chosen, and any that are still available. Until then the puppies aren't visited, to keep them safe before their vaccinations. The grown-ups, though, you can meet any time.
We've brought puppies home at eight weeks and at ten, and the right time depends on your setup. We'll talk it through with you. You leave with the papers, the vaccination card, a bag of the food they're already eating, and our number for life.
This doesn't save anything on the website. It writes a WhatsApp message to us with your answers filled in, and you press send. Tell us a bit about your home.
It depends on the registry the puppy is registered with, its colour, its gender, and whether it comes with or without breeding rights. Prices range from R20 000 to R40 000, and we confirm the exact figure in writing when a litter is confirmed.
Yes. Every puppy is registered with the relevant association, leaves with its papers, and is microchipped.
Yes. We've brought our own dogs across the country and we know people who do it safely. There are additional costs for transport, which we'll talk through with you.
Only if you want to book a particular puppy from a litter. A deposit secures that puppy for you. You don't have to pay one, but those who have will get first choice. We don't take deposits before a pregnancy is confirmed, and the waiting list itself costs nothing.
Every puppy is vet-checked before it goes home. We also ask you to take your puppy to your own vet within the first week, so you're not just taking our word for it, and so your puppy and your vet get to know each other early. After that, if you're ever worried about anything, go to the vet first, then call us. The list of conditions we go through with you is a good place to start if you're unsure what to look for.
